ASSE Greater San Jose’s Fall 2017 Scholarship Winners
Posted - Dec 08, 2017

The ASSE Greater San Jose Chapter has been involved in awarding three academic scholarships to deserving local college students. They have been recognized at the ASSE – BAESG Holiday Dinner on Wed Dec. 6.

ASSE San Jose awarded two $1,500 scholarships to San Jose State University students with an interest in the EH&S field

Sue Kaur:

Sue is an Industrial and Systems Engineering undergraduate with a clear passion for our field.  She was highly recommended by two respected EH&S professionals, including our own Christy Foster, who teachers her Occupational Health course at SJSU.  She is actively involved in several student organizations, has demonstrated leadership abilities, and is on track to become a successful EH&S professional

Laura Bates:

Laura is an Environmental Studies graduate student with career goals in the environmental field.  Her Master’s thesis involves bioretention systems and green infrastructure, with research relating to water-borne illness, air quality, and public safety.  She is a great leader with clear academic ability (including a 4.0 GPA!) and we are happy to support her contributions to the environmental field.

ASSE San Jose also contributed $250 to the Las Positas Community College scholarship for students studying occupational health and safety.  The scholarship was awarded to:

Aarin Ivans.

Aarin is an Occupational Safety and Health student who is also pursuing a CHST certification.  He has constantly established himself as a top performing student and hopes to obtain a Master’s Degree in OSH.  He is a professional union painter and uses his passion for safety to improve his workplace. We are glad to support Aarin on his path to becoming a full-time safety professional.

Congratulations to all the scholarship candidates (pictured below) and three scholarship winners and best wishes in the future!

ASSE: Northern California Wildfires & Region 1 Needs
Posted - Oct 18, 2017

Region 1 Members:

As many of us know, the wildfires in Northern California have been devastating and unimaginable loss. This past week has been unreal for those living through this event, having lost everything in a matter of moments. Images of the devastation have been flooding the airwaves and internet, but the real loss is the many families that have been left homeless with only the clothes they had on at the time they fled. There is no doubt in the resilience of the people in Northern California; however, they could use our help.

The San Francisco Chapter has the Grapevine Section in the middle of the wildfires. Peter Libeu, Chairperson, has been communicating with us as to their needs, which shift daily. At this time, their need is for PPE in protecting families as they return to their burned out areas to comb through what may be left of any belongings: 3M has donated 150,000 N95 masks.

Our goal with this email is to provide assistance and get some help for the needs of our members and communities. Below are a few of links where members and others in the community may volunteer time, donations of needed materials or supplies, and money donations for shelter.
